On a new Windows PC, what do I install?

1. Mozilla Firefox
2. Emacs (From Vincent Goulet's Website)
3. Registry hacks. 
A. Turn off "hide extensions of known file types". Do this for all
users with a registry key file.
B.  Turn off hide AppData in
user homes. 
C. Add Emacs to right click arguments.
D. Turn off Aerosnap. User can turn off in the "Ease of Access
Center". User reg key to do same for all users.

4. TortoiseSVN
5. Git (incl gitbash)


5. gpg4win

7. Putty. copy putty.exe into a place in path, eg c:\Windows\system32
8. WinSCP standalone version, executable, does not require
"installation". (http://winscp.net/eng/docs/executables). May use full
installer instead if start menu item is desired. I just copy
winscp.exe to C:\Windows\System32 and make a start menu shortcut under
Accessories.

9. 7zip
10. diffutils.  Required for Emacs Ediff. Add to PATH C:\Program Files
(x86)\GnuWin32\bin. 
11. Cutewriter: Make PDF files; 
11.5 CuteWriter wants ghostscript

12. R. Change install folder to C:\Program Files\R, add the bin/x86 to PATH in environment.
Install ALL existing R packages, configure scheduler to update automatically

16. Enigmail thunderbird addon (with magic trick: install enigmail as
user, then close thunderbird and MOVE the file from User
AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles.../extensions/{} into the system
install of thunderbird, under exensions. This means enigmail is
available to all users, they simply enable it. Otherwise, each
individual has to install for self.

17 Java runtime

19.1 OpenBUGS and JAGS for windows

20. LyX (and with it comes MikTeX, which comes bundled). Check spell
checker config. Required Java runtime

21. Other Tex editors Tex Studio, TexMaker

21. Consider: Microsoft Office, or Open Office/Libre Office.  

21. Consider: Lots of R packages? Put on System as Admin to prevent
many separate users from intalling them.

22. Consider automatically updating R packages. Put my install.update
R program on Windows scheduler

23. MS Office: everything. Blech

##21. Install Rtools. Install to c:\rtools and allow the installer to
add itself to the system path. This is a batch of GNU stuff for
windows. May include diff, would make previous install unnecessary if so.
