On RedHat 6-7,
Edit this file:
/etc/X11/fs/config
in the "catalogue" area, add a line with a path to a directory with
TrueType? fonts in it. "/usr/share/fonts/default/TrueType" is a good location.
In the directory you've created, run 'ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale' to output the font scale information (needed for TT fonts), then 'mkfontdir' to create fonts.dir (needed by XFS).
Then '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart'. I don't think you need to restart X.
TrueType? support is already in XFS. No configuration needed. Applications will have to be restarted in order to use the new fonts.
